Now nearing 80, David channels the mind and perceptions of a child just learning about his world, coping with the World War II homefront, a distant, alcoholic father, a doting, disciplinarian mother, and a cast of real-life characters ranging from the angry milkman, to mobster “Richie the Boot” Boiardo, from the mysterious half-brother who appears one day (and will later go to war and then become mayor of Livingston) to the even more mysterious "Uncle Bolton," who drops in and out of the story bringing movie projectors and a hint of a world outside this insulated yet bucolic community.David's boyhood blends the idlylic Saturday matinee lifestyle of "A Matinee Child" with a darker subtext, where every joyful episode comes at a price, where a peaceful walk in the woods with a pretty girl can be ended by a rabid dog, where Mommy has to fend off Daddy with a gun to protect her children, and where kittens have claws. Through it all, our Matinee Child observes and tries to make sense of a strange world, applying a boy's perceptions to a time more complex than he can understand.

What's not to like (I'm the author)! 5 stars!
Nice story of boy growing up innocent in a time and place where life was much more innocent than it is today. There is an purity in this story. Imagine childhood not compromised by shallow culture and wonton materialism.
